Indonesia are well known as bamboo birdcage village. Bamboo has uniqueness as a raw material for the manufacture which the bamboo products is more easily processed and has a shape wider opportunities than wood, especially bamboo in Indonesia is more easily obtained with a relatively cheap price. Seeing this opportunity, Harry Mawardi who has educational background Master of Design from the Faculty of Art and Design, Institute of Technology in Bandung (ITB) establish community with based business development of local bamboo craftsmen, and the brand of this community is “Amygdala”. Until now, Amygdala has cooperate with bamboo birdcage craftsmen in Selaawi (Sela Awi), Limbangan, and Garut Village in West Java by applying “Bamboo Empathical Design” which does not impose a craftsman expertise. Using Empathic Design Method, Amygdala deconstructed the techniques use for birdcage to found techniques that can be developed without forcing craftsmen to mastering new technique.
From those techniques, Amygdala try to help craftsmen in these bamboo birdcage villages by designing new product based on their skill and make a brand to broaden the market and increase demands. Amygdala with some craftsmen start developing various products such as furniture, lamp shade, tableware, and even fashion products. The product of Amygdala Craft leads to a lot of home decor products with a variety of items such as shankala wall clock, lamps, bowls, chairs, cutlery, glassware, coasters, shelf, bamboo pillow cases, some of women accessories (handbag and hair ribbon), some of the furniture and many other items. For 1,5 years, Amygdala gradually helps the craftsmen improving their workshops and income through Amygdala brand. Amygdala with some craftsmen have received orders not only from local market, but also from international market like Australia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, India, and Italy. According to Harry, the future business of home décor that made from bamboo will be very interesting and promising for the increasing number of new creative space who want to have unique items as his trademark. In future, Harry with Amygdala want to apply these method to other villages in Indonesia that facing similar problem and try to make jewelry from bamboo that would be a different brand lines but still affiliated with the Amygdala.
