Every form of art and crafts can be learnt in Bali. If you want to follow a quick course in Balinese dancing, painting, batik making, fruit carving, woodcarving or playing the Gamelan then it's all possible. Most of these courses are offered at wonderful places in Ubud

Ubud is well recognised as the arts and craft centre of Bali but it is also the centre for learning and there are opportunities for the visitor to take classes in a variety of craft and art lessons. For example the visitor can take a short half day course in silver-making; jewelry; wood carving; batik; traditional painting; temple offering preparation and presentation.

There are silver workshops run in a number of centres in and around Ubud which offer great value for money. For a fee of around $30US these courses generally provide small group, or one on one, tuition in the design and manufacture of genuine silver pieces such as pendants; rings or earrings and at the end of the day the visitor keeps the piece/pieces they have made. They have a personal unique piece of jewelry of thier own in addition to the enjoyment of the day for such a small fee. It is outstanding value.

In wood carving you use traditional simple tools to make carved masks; animal shapes; carved eggs etc. The cost generally is about $30US for 3 hours.

There are introductory classes in batik using traditional techniques; tools and dyes were you can copy traditional designs or create your own design. Batik classes cost a little more at around $40US

Traditional painting workshops, suitable for all abilities and age groups, deals with the understanding and use of traditional motifs and materials. Paining classes can start from as low as $30US for 3 hours

Offerings are part of the daily culture of Bali and courses can be found dealing with basket preparation, presentation and the meanings behind the offerings. This is normally a short 90 minute course which costs about $15US.

The area of Lodtunduh is one of the better known centres for these art and craft classes.  The cost of each class usually includes transport from Ubud as well as a welcome drink; a snack; a certificate; and the product that the visitor makes for themselves.

Lovely Souvenirs from Ubud, Bali >> Tegallang Handicraft Center

By: Kaho

One of the most fun activities in Ubud, Bali to me when I visited was shopping. (If you are not familiar with Indonesia, Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District. Ubud is one of Bali’s major arts and culture centers. via Wikipedia If you have seen a movie “Eat Pray Love” you might recall the beautiful scene of rice paddies. That was filmed in Ubud, Bali.) There are so many shops with beautiful handicraft items made in Ubud, Bali that you can’t help but enjoy shopping there. According to the article “Tegallalang Handicraft Center in Bali” on Bali website, “it is not an overstatement to say that perhaps the Tegallalang route may also have the longest row of art shops in the world.” I can see some of the handicrafts I saw on Jalan Raya Tegallalang being popular among some international tourists. They are beautiful.

The street of Jalan Raya Tegallalang in Ubud, Bali felt like it was the row of wholesale stores where buyers from Jakarta and other cities would go shop for their stores. It might be because the prices you find on Jalan Raya Tegallalang are probably the cheapest in Bali. Shopping in Ubud is quite reasonable except for some shops that are known as high-end brands. Shopping on Jalan Raya is for sure a bargain shopping.
