How do you know which dining table shape is right for you? There is more to it than preferring one shape over the other. We are not saying that your preference for one shape over another does not count, but there are a couple of other things to keep in mind too. Namely, the shape of your dining room or dining area and how large a group you usually seat around your dining table.

You will find that certain shapes lend themselves better to certain conditions. When you match the two, you create a flow that makes your space look and function better.

Rectangular Dining Tables

A rectangular dining table shape is maybe the most common. And there is a reason for it. A rectangle is possibly the best shape for a dining table because most dining rooms are also rectangular.

A rectangular dining table is also a good shape to seat a more than four people, especially if it comes with an extra leaf for extending the length should you need to seat additional guests.

Ideally a table with this shape should be between 36” to 42” across. Narrower rectangles can work well in a narrow room. However, if the table is any narrower than 36” you may find it difficult to fit place settings on both sides and also have enough room for food on the table. If you do prefer to have such a narrow table, you might want to consider placing the food on a sideboard, so that guests could help themselves before sitting down.

Square Dining Tables

Square shaped rooms look best with a square dining table. Square dining tables are also a good solution if you don’t have a large group to seat most of the time. A square table that can be expanded with leaves is good for the times you do need to seat more guests. Two square tables can be grouped together to create a larger rectangular seating arrangement for special occasions.

A benefit to having square tables is that they provide intimacy and a satisfying solution to seating a small number of people. It can be off-putting to have large rectangular tables when only two or three people are going to be present most of the time. A larger table when you have just a few people for the meal can make the space seem cold.

Round Dining Tables

The square table is not the solution for a smaller or square shaped room. A round dining table is another possibility, and it may very well be the best shape for small gatherings. Every one can see everyone else, conversations are easier to carry on, and the setting seems to be cozier and more intimate.

Keep in mind that a round table is not ideal for larger gatherings. A large round table simply means that while you can still see others, they seem far away, and you may have to shout across the table to be heard. Besides, most dining rooms are not large enough to accommodate very large round dining tables.

If you do prefer a round table over a rectangular one but you need to seat a larger number of people from time to time, consider getting a round table with an extension leaf. That way you could use your round table most of the time but extend it when you have company over.

Oval Dining Table

An oval dining table is very similar to a rectangular one in almost all its attributes. However, visually it seems to occupy less room than a rectangle because of rounded corners.

Use an oval table when you have a narrower or smaller room, but do need to seat more people.

What are the Standard Measurements for a Dining Table?

By: Abe Abbas

Most dining tables are made to standard measurements just the same as other furniture. Styles may vary, but upon measuring you will find that there isn't that much of a difference in size.

You can determine which standard dining room table measurements are suitable for your home based on a couple of factors. How big of an area you have at your disposal, and how many people you plan to seat around your dining table. The shape of your dining table is also a consideration.

You can use the measurements below as a recommendation and guideline, but make sure to measure your room and any furniture you plan to bring into it before making a purchase. You should also be aware that sometimes dining table dimensions may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so do not assume that all tables that seat 4 people will always have the same size. Even 2" can make a difference if you are considering furnishing a smaller dining room.

Standard Dining Table Height

While tables can have different shapes and sizes, the standard height of a dining table is pretty consistent. To function well, it has to be high enough so that there is enough clearance space above the knees of those who gather round to eat or chat. To be able to dine comfortably the table should not be too high. For that reason most dining tables are 28" to 30" high.

Counter Height Table

A counter high table is as high as a kitchen counter which is usually about 36" high. These tables come in handy in informal eating areas where there isn't a separate dining room.

Standard Round Table Measurements

A round table creates a cozy atmosphere, and it is easy to see every one at the table without having to lean over. However, this may not be the best shape if you often entertain a large number of people. While it is easy to see everyone, it is hard to carry on a conversation when you have to shout across a large expanse. A huge round dining room table also might not be the best solution for smaller spaces.

- To seat 4 people: 36"Diameter-44"Diameter
- To seat 4-6 people: 44"Diameter-54"Diameter
- To seat 6-8 people: 54"Diameter-72"Diameter

Standard Oval Table Measurements

If you only occasionally need to seat many people at your dining table, you may want to use a round table with leaves that gives you the flexibility to expand or reduce its size. However, you may also buy an oval dining table if you just like the shape. These are also suitable for smaller spaces because corners don't stick out.

Start with a 36"Diameter-44"Diameter table and use leaves to extend it.
- To seat 4-6 people: 36”W x 56”L
- To seat 6-8 people: 36?W x 72”L
- To seat 8-10 people:36?W x 84”L

Standard Square Table Measurements

A square dining table has many of the same advantages and disadvantages as a round table. Everyone can sit close together for an intimate dinner and conversation. But if you are planning to seat more than 4 people it is better to buy a square table that extends into a rectangle. Also, square tables are not suitable for narrow dining rooms.

- To seat 4 people: 36"-44" Square

Standard Rectangular Table Measurements

Out of all the different table shapes, a rectangular table is usually what comes to mind when the word "table is mentioned. Rectangular tables take up the most space, but are very suitable for larger gatherings. A narrow rectangular table maybe the most suitable shape for a long, narrow dining room.

- To seat 4 people: 36"W x 48"L
- To seat 4-6 people: 36"W x 60"L
- To seat 6-8 people: 36"W x 78"L
