An entry can be a problematic area to furnish. Sometimes it doesn't get furnished at all, with odd pieces of furniture making their way into that space along with clutter.

This is a very interesting space, because it also happens to be the introduction to your home, it is where you make your first impression. It sets the tone, and lets the visitor understand what to expect as they make their way inside.

A nicely furnished entry can also make the transition to and from your home much easier and better organized. It is even more important when you have school going kids.

Understand What You Need

Rather than starting with a particular look in mind, spend some time trying to understand what you need from this space. Every home has different needs, and all entries are built differently with varying amounts of room.

Even if your home does not even have a separate entry at all, provide a way to transition into or out of your home. A small corner by the door can be outfitted to catch some of your belongings like the mail.

Explore Storage Ideas

Storage is among the most important needs in this area of the home. The items that create the most clutter in an entry are shoes, boots, umbrellas and bags. Sports equipment needs to be stored away, as well as smaller items such as mittens gloves or scarves.

There are several options for entry storage depending on the space you have. Benches are great because they will very often have space for storage under the seat. And even if they don't, you can create your own by sliding baskets or other containers underneath. The top surface can be used for sitting to put on take off soiled shoes, as well as holding other objects such as books.

If your entry is large enough, you can install some shelving as well to catch all kinds of belongings. Doors can help hide messy clutter.

Find a Surface to Place Your Belongings

You will need some sort of surface to place your smaller objects such as keys, wallets, gloves, etc. If you have placed a chest or table in the entry, you have a built in surface. But if there is not enough space then you may look into installing a small shelf or ledge.

Where Will You Hang Everything?

You will need to hang your own and guests' jackets and coats and scarves. If there are closets then you need not worry, but there are many solutions for an entry that does not have one. Coat stands, hooks and pegs all help contain the clutter, and even add to the decor, depending on what you pick out. You may even find that installing hooks to hang up your keys is a good solution for smaller spaces.

Is There Enough Light?

Light is important in an entry, and you should make sure there's enough. If you have a large space, consider a chandelier to make a statement as well as to provide light. A floor lamp can work well here, as well as smaller lamps placed on top of chests or tables to light up the surfaces. Consider installing a light in the closet to make it easier to find things in there.

Mirrors can help light up an entryway by bouncing off and reflecting any light. They will also make the space seem bigger.

Express Your Sense of Style

Feel free to express your sense of style once you have determined all your needs. Don't forget to add personal touches in how you furnish. The containers you use for holding your belongings are an excuse to show off your creativity. A flea market could be a great place to shop for your entry furniture. One of a kind tables, chests or seats can be purchased and refurbished.

Decorative, larger mirrors perform many functions here, including echoing your style, reflecting light, as well as making your space look larger.
