Hopes of survivors dim in Dhaka

Dhaka, Feb 26 (DPA) Rescuers in this Bangladesh capital Sunday abandoned all hopes of finding anyone alive from under the debris of a multi-storey factory building that collapsed Saturday, killing at least 20 people.<\/p>\n

Civil defence officials said at least 20 people were killed including many women and more than 50 other were injured when five floors of a renovated building that housed an apparel factory toppled in an industrial zone in the capital<\/p>\n
Survivors said they had heard faint sounds of mobile phones ringing from inside the rubble but there was no response.<\/p>\n
Earlier, witnesses said hundreds of people could be trapped inside the fallen building.<\/p>\n
“We are yet to reach the ground floor of the five-storey structure where most of the bodies of the missing people are likely to be found,” said Major Naser, chief of the army rescue team.<\/p>\n
He rejected all possibilities of finding any living person in the ruins more than 36 hours after the mishap.<\/p>\n
Nearly a 100 people remain missing since the disaster that happened Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
The incident is the second in less than a year that a garment factory building collapsed, killing and wounding scores of workers. The government has ordered an enquiry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
