Bangladesh : BGMEA tells apparel units to observe emergency safety measures

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is taking major steps to ensure safety of the workers in garment factories.<\/p>\n
After examining the working conditions, BGMEA has instructed its 53 member factories to provide atleast two exits that will help evacuate workers during fire or other such accidents.<\/p>\n
Tipu Munshi, President, assured that action will be taken against factories who fail to meet these norms within about 45 days.<\/p>\n
BGMEA informed that currently, 43 units were operating and the remaining ten had been closed down on account of lack of facilities.<\/p>\n
The Association was forced to take this step after the disastrous fire in the Chittagong KTS garment factory on February 25 that saw a loss of 59 labourers and severely injuring about 150 workers.<\/p>\n
BGMEA aims to establish a healthy business environment and mutually beneficial relationship between the manufacturers, exporters and importers in the process ensuring a steady growth in the foreign exchange earnings of the country.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has also joined these efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
