The result may predict the future of mainstream Dry Cleaning in America because the new system delivers the active cleaning agents with plain water rather than deadly solvents. It is now possible to have most “Dry Clean Only” garments professionally “Wet Cleaned” without using harsh solvents that jeopardize the health of workers, customers and the environment<\/p>\n
The installation site, Community Cleaners at 2813 Lafayette Avenue in St. Louis, is an attempt by entrepreneur and serving police officer Elishama Jiles to contribute positively to the transition of the neighbourhood in more ways than one because he feels it’s a win-win situation for everybody. Less electricity is used and water leaves the plant ready to biodegrade. Employees are safer and customers don’t take toxic residue home in their garments. The installed system is a proprietary combination of advanced non-toxic cleaning agents manufactured by Winning Brands Corporation, the Solvent Free Solutions operational team and breakthrough machine technology from leading European appliance manufacturer Miele, known for its devotion to quality.<\/p>\n
Jiles could have installed the older system because people are familiar with the name “Dry Cleaning.” But following extensive research Jiles determined that St. Louis residents and his accountant could both be happy. He discovered that the Solvent Free Solutions approach works just as well or better than what millions of Americans are familiar with for their best clothing but is much safer for customers and employees, with substantially lower utility use and cleaner waste water. “If we can do it here in the heartland of America, it can and should be done across the country,” says Jiles. He is referring to the over 50,000 Dry Cleaners in the USA that still use Perchloroethylene. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published findings that “Perc” should be considered carcinogenic and considers Wet Cleaning technology promising. The State of California has already enacted a law to phase out Perc. The resulting $500 Million dollars in estimated annual cleaning agent use by professional Wet Cleaners would then be directed to environmentally sustainable production. This is considered economical for an industry whose revenues may exceed $10 Billion per year.<\/p>\n
Solvent Free Solutions Executive Assistant OJ Macdonald points out that the Perc industry should not be blamed for the fact that the nation became dependent upon a toxic chemical.
