Sisters\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 art adds flair to fiesta

A beat-up Volkswagen Rabbit was a source of continual arguments between sisters Tara Martinez Brezic and Jeannette Martinez Youle when they were teenagers in the early \u00e2\u20ac\u212290s.<\/p>\n

So was the telephone. And clothes.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We had some knock-down, drag-out fights,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Brezic who, at 34, is four years older than her sister.<\/p>\n
Youle agreed. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We hated each other,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said with a smile.<\/p>\n
But creating jewelry from beads and crystals has healed those childhood rifts.<\/p>\n
Working under the name The Gypsy Wagon, the sisters are displaying their wares at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center on Lake Grapevine as part of the hotel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Riverwalk Fiesta. Every weekend for the next two months or so, the flair of San Antonio\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s signature River Walk makes an appearance at the hotel, with entertainers, face painters and mariachis <\/p>\n
The Rowlett sisters now see those fight-provoking personality differences as assets.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153She is the most head-strong,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Brezic said.<\/p>\n
Youle agreed. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take no for an answer,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<\/p>\n
Brezic said the differences don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stop there.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have different styles, too. She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more feminine. I like my jewelry more bold, more chunky,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Brezic said.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153And I like anything with bling-bling,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Youle said.<\/p>\n
They credit their success, in part, to both of them having el ojo, which is Spanish for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the eye.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You have to have the eye,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Brezic said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not ugly, it is just different.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
While the women have shown items at several festivals, including GrapeFest, the opportunity to sell at the Gaylord Texan has given them a confidence boost, they said.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Someone came up the other day and said, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcI am wearing your stuff,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Brezic, who quit her sales job in January to concentrate on creating and selling the jewelry full time.<\/p>\n
All the stones used in the pieces \u00e2\u20ac\u201d from Australian crystal to various types of stones \u00e2\u20ac\u201d are hand-picked by the sisters.<\/p>\n
Having previously taken a beading class together, they use their own inspiration for the trinkets.<\/p>\n
\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Every Saturday at her house, it is time for sisters to get together,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Youle, who is a probation officer.<\/p>\n
Now, instead of a small Volkswagen, the sisters travel in a 2003 Yukon sport utility vehicle, which serves as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153wagon\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in their business\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 name.<\/p>\n
The gypsy part of the name harks back to when they were young and would dress up in necklaces, bracelets and anklets \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the more jewelry the better.<\/p>\n
Their father always laughed at the adornments.<\/p>\n
