Boston\u2014The Association for the Study of Jewelry and Related Arts (ASJRA) will hold its annual conference this fall, with the focus on examining personal ornament as a decorative art against the background of the turn of the 19th century into the 20th.<\/p>\n
The conference, “Ahead of Its Time: Artistic Jewelry in the Milieu of 1900,” will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. <\/p>\n
Speakers will explore a number of emergent jewelry movements, including Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, and will examine the philosophical and inspirational sources for these changes, the political and social climate of the time, and the popular motifs and technological innovations that characterize the various movements.<\/p>\n
Speakers will include curators and authors, and several young scholars will have the opportunity to present their original research.<\/p>\n
Set to speak are: Yvonne Markowitz, Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan curator of jewelry, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Elyse Zorn Karlin, publisher of Adornment, The Magazine of Jewelry and Related Arts; Kaitlin Shinnick, Windgate fellow, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Meghan Melvin, curatorial project assistant, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Susan Ward, curatorial research fellow, Department of Textile and Fashion Arts, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Jeannine Falino, independent museum curator; and Barry Shifman, curator of decorative arts, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n
The conference fee is $200, which includes continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon refreshments. ASJRA Associates may take a 10 percent discount from the fee, and full-time students at certified colleges or universities may take a 50 percent discount.<\/p>\n
