Described as transcending cultural and gender norms, Pantone’s spring colour forecast embraces man-made and natural beauty. So what does this mean for the jewellery industry?
Following the course of previous years, globally recognised colour specialist Pantone has again collaborated with fashion designers involved in New York Fashion Week and additional ‘influencers’ to select a colour spectrum that is expected to influence trends in the jewellery, fashion and other creative industries next season.
According to the colour authority, the spring 2016 palette draws on artistic inspiration from one’s need to escape to nature as well as the love for urban design. Aimed at representing the world inhabited by humans – both constructed and organic – designers have “sought to awaken a sense of reflection, followed by playful escapism”.
Commenting on the latest shades, Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said, “Colours this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves…With our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation.”
Moving away from the retro, minimalistic 2015 spring palette, Pantone this year presents vibrant yet quiet and classic hues that are said to encompass all genders and walks of life. The palette celebrates all that is artistic and creative, drawing from artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Frank Stella, Esther Stewart and Sam Falls.
The top 10 colours for spring 2016The soothing, calming nature of colours in the spring palette are led by
Rose Quartz. Described as being akin to a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, this hue acts as a reminder to reflect on one’s surroundings during the busy but lighthearted warmer months.
Peach Echo emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family.
Weightless and airy,
Serenity is said to comfort with a calming effect and provide people with a naturally connected sense of space.
A maritime-inspired blue,
Snorkel Blue, falls within the navy family but with a happier, more energetic context. The name alone implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape.
Buttercup provides some warm vibrancy amongst the otherwise calm palette, while
Limpet Shell is a shade of aqua that gives a sense of crisp clarity and freshness.
Lilac Gray offers neutral subtlety with its slight purple tint, adding a distinctive edge to this classic gray shade.
Another neutral to join the league is
Iced Coffee. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and refinement is said to create a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette.
The strong and fiery, yellow-based red,
Fiesta, provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette.
Green Flash is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend that reportedly continues to inspire designers.
Pantone’s forecasts have provided insight into upcoming trends for more than 20 years. They can help jewellery retailers to predict the colours that will inspire designers and ultimately customers seeking on-trend jewellery pieces.
