Moonstone is another of the ‘starred’ or ‘lighted’ stones, with a changing reflection coming from within. In the East this indicated a stone of good luck; a potent spirit of good dwelling within. In India the moonstone was considered a very sacred stone and would not be displayed for sale unless it was on a yellow cloth; yellow being the most sacred of colors there.
Mystics the world over used the moonstone for meditation purposes, the moving inner light being a good focus for meditation. It was long believed to be a stone with a calming presence whose influence could assist those wishing to fall into a trance.
As the name suggests, the moonstone is closely associated with the moon and therefore is the stone for Monday. The calming presence mentioned and this association with the moon suggested the moonstone as an excellent aid for those with troubles sleeping or experiencing troubled sleep. Magicians would schedule its use by the phases of the moon, using it in spells of increase as the moon was waxing and for decrease as the moon waned. Planted in a garden under the full moon, moonstone was thought to increase the yield and fertility of that garden. The moon has much influence over the waters on this planet, and so the moonstone was also regarded as an excellent protector and talisman to wear on sea voyages or while swimming.
Just as the moon renews itself every month, the moonstone was also supposed to be able to help it’s wearer regain or retain a more youthful appearance and bearing. The romance of the moon was also considered reflected in this stone. A person seeking their true love was instructed to hold a moonstone in their hands while the moon was full and envision their love coming to them. They were then to carry the stone with them until the next full moon for the spell to take effect. A moonstone was often exchanged between lovers who had quarreled to help bring tranquility and love back to them.
As a talisman for fertility, love, protection, or sleep, the beautiful moonstone needs little excuse for ownership. With its silvery light and ever changing surface it truly is the stone of the moon.
