There’s another reason why many tourists visit the traditional village of Tenganan are fascinated by the annual ritual Perang Pandan and buy Gringsing fabric. Gringsing fabric uses the art of double binding (ikat ganda) in producing process.
Double binding has more complexity than the usual single binding. In double binding, fabric pattern has been planned since the manufacture of color on the thread. All materials required in the manufacture of Gringsing fabrics are made from natural and can be found around the Tenganan Village, except Taum leaves or leaves to make Indigo blue color. The manufacturing process was done traditionally by hand without a machine and takes a long time. No wonder the price always high. Smallest size, about 60 cm x 150 cm worth IDR 400.000 even more.

The first process of making Gringsing cloth begins with the manufacture of thread colors. Generally the colors of Gringsing fabric only have 3 to 4 colors, yellow, blue, red, and black. Many people said that the manufacture of red in Gringsing fabric is made from human blood. The news spread by them to other villages to protect their natural coloring process. They do this to maintain the uniqueness of their art.

The first is coloring process on the basis of the color yarn, the color yellow. To produce a yellow color, yarn soaked in hazelnut oil for 1 month 7 days. Then dried in the sun until completely dry. The yellow thread wrapped around the wooden frame in accordance with the size of the Gringsing cloth. Once caught in size, it created a new pattern motif. Ways of making motive is to preserve the color red, black, or yellow, and the rope wrapped around different colors according to the color to be created. Alpha The rest is left open without winding raffia for immersion dipped leaf or leaf Taum Indigo for a week to produce a blue color. For this process, the yarn is sent to the city near the beach so that blue color gets more leverage.

Then, after the blue color, yarn Tenganan to be sent again to resume the process of coloring red. Soaking of roots Sunti or Morinda citrifolia used to produce a color camera. Red staining requires a long time to 2 until 4 years for the drying process under the solar heat. In the past it could take up to 10 years for the drying process by using the wind to produce a red color. Red staining process is the last process. Black is the color of blue mixed with red.

After the coloring process is complete, the thread is soaked in rice water immersion. And then dried under the sun for a day. After all the process was finished, there was a weaving process. Weaving done to get the desired motif. Gringsing weaving process itself takes 3 to 4 weeks.

The meaning of the word Gringsing means ‘no pain’. The three colors on the Gringsing fabric red symbolizes fire, white or yellow means wind, and black means water. All of these elements are the elements required by the body balance so as not to hurt. Based on these beliefs, Gringsing fabric provides its own power on the user. Gringsing fabric wears in religious ceremonies such as tooth filing ceremonies and weddings. Even some people stray colored threads as a talisman of their power.

This is the most well known craft by Tenganan villagers. Cain has been a signature for collectors worldwide. The price continues to rise. The unique fabric is, the older the cloth, the colors getting out and nice. To maintain the color, washing was unique, simply washed under the rain.
