KATHMANDU, Nov 4 – Export of readymade garment to the US has plunged by a whopping 46 percent in the first 10 months of 2014 compared to same period last year, as companies hit by labor stir and eroding competitiveness, failed to lure international buyers.
According to the statistics of Garment Association Nepal (GAN), Nepali readymade garment exports valued mere US $ 22.92 million over the first 10 months of the year, whereas it was US $ 42.41 million in the same period last year. Read more about Garment export to US records 46 pc plunge

COIMBATORE: The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry and the Integrated Database India Limited will organise ‘Tex Trade Today’, a textile exhibition, on January 19 and 20, next.

The exhibition, to be held in Bangalore, will have two sessions – B to B and B to C. The former session is for yarn and fabric manufacturers and will have garment and home textile manufacturers as visitors. Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela wants garment companies to pay more for employing nonresident workers who are excluded from the minimum wage hike plan that is pending in the Legislature.

House Bill 15-166, authored by Rep. Joseph Deleon Guerrero, seeks to gradually raise the minimum wage to $5.25 per hour with the exception of sewers or cutters employed in the garment industry. Read more about Tudela recommends $1K fee for garment workers

About 70 child workers in India have been discovered working in a Delhi textile factory, officials say.
They say that the boys were embroidering saris and wedding clothes in a sweatshop when police and activists swooped to rescue them.

Officials say it is the third such raid made this week, following a report on Sunday in a British newspaper on child labour in Delhi.

The move followed a meeting last week between the ministry and southern clothing companies to discuss problems of mismatch between export contracts and quotas which was causing Vietnamese firms to lose business.

Over 50 employees of a garment factory in Tehaucán, Puebla have been sacked for their affiliation with rival trade unions and non-governmental organisations.
The workers had been organising against the interference of the Puebla state government by way of the FROC-CROC union’s presence in the Grupo Navarra factory, which makes clothes for Abercombie & Fitch, Gap, Levi and Calvin Klein, amongst others. FROC-CROC is affiliated to the PRI (Partido Revolucionario Institutional) political party, which runs the state government. The two bodies have been colluding against worker’s organisation, psychologically and physically harassing workers, withholding wages and union-busting.
