Pakistan : Govt. mulls over R&D assistance to leather garment

Government is contemplating extending six percent Research & Development (R&D) support to leather garment sector as exports have continued their slide.

Acting on the persistent demand of Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA), Export promotion Bureau has moved a proposal in this regard to Ministry of Commerce.

PLGMEA was advocating for this move as they faced tough competition from China in low-cost leather segment. It was demanding R&D support for research and development in the areas of information collection, modernisation of garment designing, quality improvement and use of new and better accessories. Garments, textiles nab top spot for exports

For the first time, textile and garment exports have exceeded that of oil. According to the General Statistics Office, garment exports reached US$5.8 billion in the nine month period ending September 30, up 31.6 per cent year-on-year. Crude exports on the other hand were $5.7 billion, down about 12.8 per cent.

Artisans from Rio Grande do Sul find new use for garment production offcuts

Guaporé – The offcuts of over 60 industries and garment manufacturers in the region of Guaporé, a city 199 kilometres away from Rio Grande do Sul state capital Porto Alegre, are made into products like handbags, dolls, carpets and garments. The initiative, apart from contributing to preservation of the environment, guarantees artisans in the city a line of their own products and greater income.

The line of articles they produce is very broad. Up to the 20th of this month, products made by the group and focussed on the youth clientele are being exhibited at Guaporé Culture House, in the city, from 1:30 pm to 8:00 pm. A group of 10 artisans make up the nucleus of the Entrepreneur Handicraft Project in Guaporé, established in 2005.
