Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called upon all stakeholders to immediately solve the prevailing crisis regarding minimum wage structure in the readymade garment (RMG) sector and look into other hidden causes that are responsible for the stalemate.
The minimum wage is one of the causes of violence in the sector but many other issues –workers right, overtime, regular increment, bonus, incentives and other facilities — need to be resolved for bringing back normalcy in the thriving garment sector, they said. Dhaka’s Garment Industry Is A Ticking Time Bomb

Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) – Saturday’s massive protest rallies by garment workers in Bangladesh’s capital city was a time bomb that had been ticking for years. The violence-marred protest was organized by workers demanding better pay and improved working conditions. Despite a state ban on public demonstrations, more than 10,000 garment workers protested on Dhaka’s streets. The police, together with members from Bangladesh’s army, dispersed the rallies.

50 hurt, 20 garment factories vandalised in Bangladesh

Workers agitating for a higher Eid bonus have vandalised 20 garment factories on the outskirts of this Bangladesh capital, yet another round of violence in an industry that fetches the highest export earnings

Over 50 people, mainly workers, but also a few policemen, were hurt in clashes at the Tejgaon Industrial Area, media reports said.

Nigeria: Let the Textiles Roll Again

If the Federal Government is really serious about its programme of massive job creation, the textile Industry revival is one key area it ought to focus its attention. A one time biggest employer of labour has remained largely comatose due to adverse macro economic policies of the past successive administrations.

The industry’s unfortunate descent into its present despicable state actually originated from the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) era of the 1980s when local manufacturers suddenly became defenceless against the influx of goods arising from unfavourable foreign exchange rate regime. Available statistics on the current situation is indeed worrisome. At 30 per cent, the capacity utilisation of textile factories is ridiculously low. And from 137,000 in 1996, direct employment in the industry has reduced drastically to 25,000.
