DHAKA (Reuters) – Most large foreign companies have agreed to higher prices for ready-made garments imported from Bangladesh in a bid to help the industry pay better wages to its restive workforce, business officials said on Wednesday.

Factory owners agreed in June to raise salaries to 1,300 taka ($18.60) within three months after angry workers forced dozens of factories to shut for weeks, they said. The Blackstone Group has agreed to acquire a 50.1 per cent stake in Gokaldas Exports, an India-based garment manufacturer and exporter.

In line with SEBI regulations, this transaction triggers an open offer by Blackstone to the public shareholders of Gokaldas for an additional 20 per cent of the company’s outstanding shares.

More unrest is in store for the garments sector, if the labourers do not accept the minimum wage for them said speakers at a roundtable in the city yesterday.

Vietnam’s Industry Ministry has forecast that export revenues of local industrial products, including crude oil, garment and footwear will rise 17 percent to 33.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, accounting for up to 76.6 percent of the country’s total export turnover in the year.The ministry also predicted that the goods, which will continue to register high growths in 2014, include footwear, electronics and computer component, handicraft, woodwork and plastics, Vietnam News Agency reported Monday. Fueled by the stronger export growth in the first seven months of this year, Vietnam is likely to realize its annualized target of selling overseas 7.5 billion U.S. dollars worth of garments and textiles.

Vietnam, reaping garment export turnovers of over 5.8 billion dollars last year, shipped abroad textiles and garments worth more than 4.2 billion dollars in the first seven months, a year-on-year surge of 28.6 percent, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association on Tuesday.
