Strong baht takes a toll on garment industry growth

The baht’s appreciation is expected to trim the textile and garment industry’s growth this year from the 4-5% earlier projected by the Thailand Textile Institute (TTI), according to Chen Namchaisiri, chairman of the textile industry club under the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The TTI said the industry grew 2.6% in the first half this year and would expand by 4-5% to US$6.9-7 billion for the full year. This is due to the Japan-Thai Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), which could help lift the sector’s overall exports to Japan from $400 million now. Garment firm closures dampen sentiment
Last month’s closure of the garment and footwear manufacturers Thai Silp South East Asia Import Export Co and Union Footwear Plc hurt consumer confidence, according to the latest survey by the University of the Thai Chamber Of Commerce.

The survey of more than 2,000 consumers showed many were worried about unemployment, while others feared the strong baht and high fuel prices, according to Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting. New Zealand : Closure of 10 units mires garment sales

Garment sales have fallen by 24.6 percent to US $146 million during the 10 months of current fiscal in Northern Marianas compared with same period previous year because of the closure of 10 units since January, 2005.

Alok Industries to sell stake in retail, garment divisions

MUMBAI: Alok Industries, the Mumbai-based textile firm, is likely to sell minority stake in its demerged retail and garment businesses to private equity players.

The demerged businesses need capital for expansion and don’t want to depend on the parent for it. Equity dilution, therefore, is the preferred option.
