The closure of several garment factories on the island, which has already resulted in the displacement of thousands of guest workers, has not stopped the arrival of more alien workers for the industry, said the federal ombudsman office.
“There are still lots of new workers coming in every day. At the Ombudsman’s Office, we are right across the hall from the Social Security office. All the new workers have to get Social Security cards before they begin work.This past week, there was a large number coming in [for a garment factory]. .I also understand there are several hundred permits waiting to be printed at LIIDS for even more workers to come in,†said federal ombudsman Jim Benedetto in an e-mail interview. PHNOM PENH, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) — Cambodia has become the sixth largest garment exporting country in the world, the Chinese-language newspaper the Commercial Daily reported on Tuesday.
The newspapers quoted government spokesman Khieu Kanharith as saying that the pillar industry creates job opportunities for some 500,000 people in Cambodia. According to Mesarina, the popular shopping emporium is a virtual time-bomb. The size said large, but there was no way the zip would go higher than Lynne de Maid’s waist. The silk dress was exactly what she was looking for, the R1 595 price tag was fine with her budget, and the size marked in the dress was hers.
But we were soon to find that nothing De Maid tried on in her size would fit her.
Waterfront designer stores didn’t appear to stock anything larger than a 14 and even what they had was too small for a regular size 14.
Weekend Argus accompanied 40-something De Maid this week as she went from store to store in the Waterfront to find something to wear.

Garment manufacturer Winners Corp. is also closing down its operations on Saipan effective Feb. 5, 2014.
The Afetnas-based Winners Corp. is the fifth garment factory in the past month to announce shutdown and suspension of factories on the island.
Saipan Tribune learned yesterday from Winners’ official Mathilde Igitol that they have over 500 workers, including less than 90 resident employees.
Winners’ general manager Min Ho Sik informed the Department of Labor last Thursday about the planned closure. Read more about Winners Garment closing too …

Multinational apparel firm House of Pearl Fashions has acquired a new warehouse facility in Milton Keynes, UK. The storage facility will be a garment logistics warehouse with a capacity of nearly 43,000 sqft and has been acquired through its subsidiary, Poeticgem.
