Ludhiana, July 13: After the detection of tax evasion to the tune of Rs 15 crore this April by Vishvkarma Alloys, the Central Excise Department has detected yet another fraud—involving another Rs 15 crore.
In a comprehensive investigation against a garment export house based in industrial area A, the department found it has claimed rebates worth Rs 15 crore over last three years. Duty invoices of Rs 12 crore were found bogus and further investigations are on, revealed VK Garg, Chief Commissioner, Central Excise Commissionerate, Ludhiana. HA NOI — Garment exports grew 33 per cent year-on-year in the first six months of this year, earning a total of US$2.7 billion, $1.4 billion of which came from the US market, reported the Viet Nam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas).The majority of exports to the US fell under quotas, suggesting a likely quota shortage in later months of the year, according to Vitas chairman Le Quoc An. Up to 300,000 jobs in the apparel industry could be lost if Thailand’s currency continues to strengthen, according to local exporters. Phongsak Assakul, president of the Thai Textile Manufacturing Association, said the apparel industry was facing a genuine crisis that would affect the 1.06 million people who work in the weaving, textile and garment sectors.

The garment and textile sector has not grown as expected despite the fact that limits on exports were removed when Viet Nam joined the World Trade Organisation, according to industry experts.
They said Vietnamese businesses aren’t taking advantage of opportunities to make Free on Board (FOB) goods– items that Vietnamese companies are no longer responsible for after they are loaded onto transport ships or planes. These contracts can be more lucrative for export businesses because they do not have to insure the cargo or pay import duties when the items reach their destination. (Marianas Variety Online) – The remaining workers of Handsome (Saipan) Inc. have started cleaning up the facility of the Tanapag garment factory, which is closing its business operations on Sunday after 10 years of operating here.
Former employees, as well as some employees of its sister factory, Top Fashion Corp., were cleaning up the area yesterday and hauling office furniture, equipment and other items either for disposal or transfer to another facility.
