Garment makers remain sceptical

THE Australian Government has offered to vary the rules of origin under SPARTECA but only if certain conditions are fulfilled.

Local garment operators have vigorously lobbied for a long time for the local content requirement of 50 per cent under SPARTECA to be reduced to 25 per cent for garments made in Fiji.

Indus Fila buys garment firm for Rs 93.5 mn

MUMBAI: Apparel maker and exporter, Indus Fila Thursday said it has acquired 51 per cent stake in Indus Garments for a consideration of Rs 9.35 crore.

Readymade Garment Exports To US Rise

Export of readymade garments to US has increased by 28 per cent in the month of June worth compared to a drop by 16 per cent in the same period last year. During last year, readymade garments worth $4359945 were exported to US, while this year saw an export worth $5563610.
Uday R Pandey, general secretary of the Garment Association of Nepal (GAN) said that last year, export was worse which registered a little improvement this year. However, in the coming months, there is still uncertainty over the export market, a matter the government must address through the budget and correct the prevalent ills, said Pandey. PROBLEMS resulting from SPARTECA are to be blamed for the substantial drop in garment production and not the non-performance of a particular factory.

Textile, Clothing and Footwear Council president Ramesh Solanki said it was wrong to attribute the 59.2 per cent drop in garment production to the poor performance of Ghim Li garments because the company’s production problems was evident two to three years before it closed.

He was responding to a statement made by Government Statistician Timoci Bainimarama, who attributed the decline in the manufacturing sector in 2005 largely to the huge fall in garment production. Read more about Trade deal at fault: Solanki …

Bangladesh : BGMEA gets HC’s stay over vessel surcharge

Following the petition filed by Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA), a divisional bench of High Court (HC) has stayed the imposition of surcharge on containers by feeder-vessel authorities at Chitagong port for two months.

Bangladesh set to overtake India in garment exports

Bangladesh is set to beat India’s garment exports in the wake of an appreciating rupee.

Last year, the country exported garments worth $ 8 billion, whereas Bangladesh notched up around $ 7.8 billion. With low manufacturing costs coupled with several incentives in the overseas market, Bangladesh apparel exports have continuously been rising at a rate of 20-25 per cent.

Industry experts believe if the rupee continues to appreciate against dollar, the country’s garments exports will be pushed into negative territory. Rahul Mehta, president, Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), said, “Bangladesh will easily surpass India in garment exports by the end of this year.” Read more about Bangladesh set to overtake India in garment exports …
