Renewed RMG labour unrest at DEPZ
Two foreigners among 25 injured as garment workers continue agitation

Labour unrest at Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) at Savar continued for the second consecutive day yesterday. Agitating workers of a garment factory demanding salary hike, job security, night transports for female staff, etc attacked the pro-management employees leaving at least 25 including two foreigners injured. Several rooms of the garment factory, Lemi Fashion Ltd, were also ransacked by the unruly workers.

UNB, Savar:Over 50 people were injured and one garment factory was ransacked in a fresh flare-up of labour unrest Wednesday in the violence-ridden Dhaka Export Processing Zone in Savar area.

PHNOM PENH (XFN_ASIA) – Cambodia’s garment and textile exports in 2005 rose 10 pct to nearly 2.2 bln usd, topping 2 bln usd for the first time, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said.

‘This data is very encouraging,’ said Ros Harvey, chief technical advisor for ILO Better Factories Cambodia.
‘We are seeing a steady growth in the sector. However there are still many challenges ahead for the industry,’ she said in a statement.The boom created nearly 30,000 new jobs in a sector that was thought doomed after the end of an international quota system in Jan 2005, the ILO said. It is heartening to know that the government is likely to revise the wage in the garment sector. A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) also unanimously decided to settle the issue relating to the minimum wages of garment workers immediately. This decision has been made to help keep the apparel sector free of any labour unrest.

The recent attacks on the apparel sector have, however, woken up the authorities concerned and brought forward the issue of garment workers’ wages for immediate solution. A report hinted that the government committee will comprise, among others, members — two from BGMEA, one from the BKMEA and one each from three labour organisations — to discuss on wage issues and find an acceptable wage structure for their workers. Bangladesh garment exporters don’t implement workers’ deals

Dhaka, May 31 : Garment manufacturers and exporters in Bangladesh have yet to implement four agreements signed between 1997 and 2005 to defuse problems following labour unrests, says a study by Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS).

In one such unrest last week, between 200 and 350 garment factories in and around Dhaka are estimated to have been burnt or destroyed. The three-day violence led to three people being killed and over 100 being injured.
