Century Textile and Industries Limited (CTIL) has forayed into apparels business in a big way with the setting up of exclusive stores across the country to retail a range of product categories.

Under its wholly owned subsidiary Cottons by Century, the company has 46 stores and 10 franchisee outlets and has begun distribution of varied readymade garments in Kerala with opening of 32 stores through a single dealer. ‘We will be opening 70 new stores in this year, with expansion mostly in the West and North. Around 70 per cent of our operational costs are from retail business for we invest Rs 15-20 lakh per store,’ said Subrata Siddhanta, business head, Cottons by Century, at a press conference recently. During that 20-year interval, the immigrant population in the United States increased from 14 million to 31 million, but the percentage of those immigrants living in the city of Los Angeles declined from 6.8% to 4.9%, according to U.S. census data. Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) – The exports of the Nepali readymade garment (RMG) to the United States witnessed a huge fall of 66 per cent in terms of value in March, 2014.

China – Textile and Garment Export down 9.03% in First Quarter

According to Customs data, the accumulated export of textile and garment were 34.062 billion USD in the first three months, down 9.03% to the same period of last year. Nevertheless, it shows a little recovery compared with 14.54% negative growth rate in first two months. The textile export were 12.017 billion USD, down 15.6%; garment 22.045 billion USD, down 5%.

DHAKA (AFP) — At least 15,000 Bangladesh garment factory workers went on strike Tuesday to call for higher wages as food prices in the impoverished nation soar, police said.

Bandladesh’s garment industry, crucial for the economy as the leading export earner, saw dozens of factories idle at the Fatullah industrial area, 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Dhaka, local police chief Bhuiyan Mahbub Hasan said.
