Arguing that imports of garments from China have soared significantly, the Indonesian Textile Association (API) insists that safeguard measures are needed to save the domestic industry.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is taking major steps to ensure safety of the workers in garment factories.

After examining the working conditions, BGMEA has instructed its 53 member factories to provide atleast two exits that will help evacuate workers during fire or other such accidents.

THE competitiveness of China’s manufacturing industries has been seriously eroded over the past year, according to one of the world’s largest trade sourcing companies.

Hong Kong-based Li & Fung group, which manages a $US7.1 billion ($9.75 billion) a year trading business, said price rises crept back into the Sino-US and EU supply chains last year, after at least six years of often “severe deflation”.

NEW YORK Nearly a century after a famous fire that killed 146 garment workers, a crowd of public officials, labor leaders and schoolchildren gathered on the spot for an annual ceremony.
The Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire took place in New York City 95 years ago tomorrow.

Most of the victims were immigrant women. Many plunged to their deaths after finding the fire doors locked. Some fell off an overcrowded fire escape.
