Chinese garment quotas breathing life into vulnerable Asian textile sectors

HNOM PENH (AFP) – Asia’s most vulnerable garment sectors have survived — even flourished — and proved the nay-sayers wrong during their first year without the protection of the global quota system.

But industry officials say they have only done so with the help of additional safeguards imposed by the United States and European Union against textile giant China

Chinese textile industry is expected to record a 20 percent rise in value earnings and 10 percent increase in yarn and chemical fibre production in 2014 over last year.

As for the exports, a 15 percent growth in textile and garment exports is foreseen.

Pakistan : Project for garment workers’ training mooted

A project meant to create training facilities in woven as well as knitted garment sector for female workers and others has been put forth to industrialists.

Vietnam tries ex-trade boss for US garment graft

HANOI: A former vice minister of trade went on trial on Tuesday on charges of accepting thousands of dollars in bribes involving garment and textiles exports to the United States.

The former official, his son and 12 others are the latest among dozens of officials to be prosecuted for graft in recent years as Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party makes fighting corruption one of its major policies.

China textile exports fall in Feb. on weaker demand, harsh weather

BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhua) — China’s textile and garment exports in February dropped 32.9 percent from the previous month, largely due to weakening U.S. and European demand and the severe winter storms, customs authorities said.

Garment industry looking at export target of $25 bn

Chennai, March 13. (PTI): The garment industry in the country is looking at achieving an export target of $25 billion by 2014-11, a top Apparel Export Promotion Council official said.

Garment exports would touch $9.3 billion this year ending March, recording a growth of 9-10 per cent over last year, AEPC Chairman Vijay Aggarwal said at the inauguration of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) at Mogappair here.
