Gender equity is key to eradicating poverty, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in Bangladesh Suneeta Mukherjee said in Dhaka yesterday.

As half of the population in the society are women, a country cannot advance if the overall condition of the womenfolk does not improve, Mukherjee said at a discussion marking International Women’s Day 2014, which was observed on Wednesday.

Properties worth over Tk 5 lakh were gutted in a devastating fire at a garments and sweater factory at the city’s busy GEC intersection on Wednesday night.

However, there was no casualty since the incident occurred when the workers had left the factory after work.

THURSDAY, March 9 (HealthDay News) — A neoprene suit, similar to the bottom half of a diving wetsuit, can help save the lives of women suffering obstetrical bleeding during childbirth, a leading cause of death among women giving birth in developing nations.

“In our research, women who appeared clinically dead, with no blood pressure and no palpable pulse, were resuscitated and kept alive for up to two days while waiting for blood transfusions,” study director Suellen Miller, an international maternal health expert and director of the Safe Motherhood Programs at the University of California, San Francisco’s Global Health Imperative, said in a prepared statement. The local apparel industry asked the Legislature yesterday to revisit a proposal that would reduce garment taxes and fees.

The tax breaks, according to the Saipan Garment Manufacturing Association, would keep factories afloat while they were waiting for the Headnote 3(a) amendment.

The Headnote 3(a) bill would grant U.S. insular areas equivalent treatment to free trade partners by extending to all products, including textile and apparel, the requirements that eligible products contain at least 30 percent U.S. and local content.
