KUB plans to sell garment maker

KUB Malaysia Bhd plans to sell all its shares in KUB Tekstil Sdn Bhd, a garment maker, for RM15.7 million to reduce debt and finance future investments.

The loss-making company is undergoing a revamp by selling its non-core business and focus on a few main ones.

Lai Sun Garment will sell 51.01% of clothing division Crocodile Garments to chairman Lam Kin Ming for HKD192.03m (US$24.6m), Reuters reported.

Lai Sun will still hold 3.92% of Crocodile, which Lam is also chairman of, after the transaction.

FINALLY the BGMEA seems to have become active to check it. Over 300 workers have so far been killed in garment factory fires since 1990 and such incidents continue to occur to kill workers even today.
From the activities carried out by investigating authorities following a fire incident, it appears that they are more inclined to exclude owners from any blame and subsequently from the charge sheet. We can assume that some dubious deals take place under the table work. In all cases it is seen that committee reports gather dusts, no significant action is taken. It is alleged that an investigation report sometimes is altered in a way so that it rather helps the factory owner claim insurance money.
Factory owners, despite recurring incidents of deaths from fire and stampede, never paid any heed to the call for maintaining better working and safety standards. In most of the factory buildings there are no fire exits and the main gates are kept under lock and key by security personnel who run away at any sign of trouble. Labor set hearing for 154 displaced workers of Michigan garment

The March 30 closure of longtime CNMI garment manufacturer Michigan Inc. will affect over a hundred alien workers, according to the Department of Labor.

Labor officials told Saipan Tribune yesterday that on March 27 or three days before Michigan’s scheduled shutdown, they will conduct transfer hearing or for any possible claims of the affected workers.

Apparel exporters sew up $900 million

HA NOI — Viet Nam’s garment manufacturers posted revenue of US$900 million from exports in January and February, a 46 per cent year-on-year increase, reported the Ministry of Trade.

The ministry attributed the strong performance in part to strong demand from the US, which accounted for sales of over $300 million during the two-month period.
