When Renie Dougher was growing up in West Scranton in the 1970s, the garment industry looked pretty secure.

Her mother sewed for Alperin Inc. in Old Forge and her father worked as an engineer for sister company Triple A Trouser in Scranton.

Overtime was plentiful for her parents. Ms. Dougher often made dinner for her sisters when mom and dad worked late.

“Get a job there and get into the union,” her father advised her. She did.

Looking back on her 20 years in quality control at Alperin, Ms. Dougher admitted questioning her choice and her parents’ advice at times.

Her parents couldn’t have foreseen the globalization of garment manufacturing or the flood of cheap imports that obliterated hundreds of mills and dress shops in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Read more about Stitch in time …

It isn’t a giant leap for man, much less a giant step for mankind. But in the history of the advancement of 21st century science, there may be just a small mention of the day a supermarket brought the stain resistant white shirt to the masses.
While the most upmarket manufacturers offer the advantages of a shirt impervious to staining from tea, wine and even ketchup, Asda yesterday announced it will make them widely available under its own George brand. The shirts, in crisp and gleaming cotton, will retail for around £14.

Asda makes bold claims for its garment, made from Permatech cotton. It possesses “revolutionary” qualities. “Liquid simply runs off the fabric leaving no stain and disasters are averted,” its blurb says. “A must have addition to any man’s work wardrobe”. Israel’s textile and fashion industry has been one of the worst-hit industries by the recession. Offis Textile Ltd. (TASE:OFIS) president Ramzi Gabbay, who serves as chairman of the Textile and Fashion Industries Association of the Manufacturers Association of Israel, said that the industry was in the throes of its worst downturn in the history of the country.
