Electronics, Jewelry, Golf Accessories, and Chair Stolen: Watauga County Crimestoppers

Jewelry, iron-rod chairs, electronics, and golf equipment headline this week’s Crimestoppers report.

Numerous items of jewelry were taken from a residence on Bryant Combs Road between June 22nd and July 1st.

A rod-iron chair and small green round table were taken form a residence on Shady Bark Lane on either July 2nd or July 3rd.
There was an additional larceny reported at the Boone Golf Club located at 433 Fairway Drive, between 6:00 P.M. on July 2nd and 8:30 A.M. on July 4th. Two golf bags with assorted clubs and equipment were stolen from a storage area. Also contained in one of the bags was a wedding band. The property was valued at around $5,300. Japan's Jewelry Recyclers

TOKYO — Across Japan, retail shops that recycle jewelry are popping up in an entrepreneurial effort to profit from soaring commodity prices.

Platinum prices in Japan have jumped as much as 50% since January, and gold has risen as much as 21% during the same time period. While prices of the two metals have slipped recently, they remain above their five-year averages. Read more about Japan's Jewelry Recyclers

Costume Jewelry That Doesn't Look Cheap

Fashionistas who glimpsed the fall 2008 runway shows saw an emerging trend: statement jewelry. Among the scene stealers was a number at the Givenchy show featuring a dozen thick, gold chains with crosses messily layered, as well as a 3-inch-wide pearl and crystal choker at Balenciaga. Bold looks stood front and center.

However, most people don’t have the dimes–make that hundreds of thousands of dimes–to afford such flourishes. (The aforementioned Balenciaga costs a cool $9,875). Costume jewelry, on the other hand, which generated $900 million in U.S. sales in 2007 (according to a May 2008 report released by Supplier Relations, an Irvine, Calif.-based market research company), can be affordable and a perfect match with current fashions–and it doesn’t have to look cheap. Retired educator opens jewelry business at the Narrows

Fall River —

A good teacher keeps learning and Annie Prescott kept learning as she made her way through a 35-year career as an English teacher at B.M.C. Durfee High School.
What she’d been learning since 1998 was how to make jewelry, most of it from clay.
And, when she retired last month, she was ready to learn a little more.
Wednesday morning found Prescott moving into her new studio space at the Narrows Center for the Arts on Anawan Street in Fall River. The business is called Annie’s Artifax.

Bead Bazaar children's jewelry recalled

WASHINGTON, July 3 (UPI) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Bead Bazaar USA children’s jewelry due to lead exposure.
