The number markings on precious gold jewelry are a bit of confusion to lots of people. We are generally used to seeing a karat or silver mark like this: 10K, 14K, 18K, Sterling, etc. The numbers mean the same thing.

For 14k the number is technically 583 but most manufacturers adopted the European way and make 14k gold a tiny bit over 14k, so the mark is 585 in most 14k jewelry. 18K is marked 750. If the mark is valid and there is a makers mark also in the jewelry, the number means these items are 18k gold. Read more about How To Read Jewelry Marks

We love our jewelry, and want it to last as long as possible. At Gonna Luv It, we get questions all the time from people who want to know how to care for sterling silver jewelry. Use these tips to keep your jewelry beautiful.

Keep your sterling silver away from toiletries. Lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, and more can coat your silver with a sticky residue that is very difficult to remove. We suggest that you think of your jewelry as a crowning touch. Don’t put it on until you have finished putting on your other beauty products. At the end of the day, take it off before you bathe. This will protect your fine jewelry from becoming dull and unattractive. Read more about Sterling Silver Jewelry – Keep The Gleam!

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Nillie Bipper Festival, the Cleveland Creative Arts Guild commissioned a local artist, Avery McNeese, to work rubies into two pieces of handcrafted jewelry to be given each day of the Nillie Bipper Festival.

Originally, the representatives from the guild were seeking a craftsman from out of state, but loyal to their local roots, they selected Avery to do the piece.

Avery crafted each pendant using a clay that consists of 80 percent pure silver and 20 percent organic material. Read more about Ruby hand-crafted jewelry commissioned for 40th Anniversary

Federal prosecutors yesterday gave their first public hint of how they intend to deal with Le-Nature’s founder Gregory Podlucky and other former employees of the fraud-riddled company when they sought court permission to take ownership of more than $20 million in jewelry seized as part of their ongoing criminal investigation.

The 27-page list of items, filed in connection with a civil complaint brought by U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, would provide full employment to a corps of security guards. Jewelry & Racism

Jewelry & Racism

While there have been many articles on Sitnews, both pro and con, concerning the petition to limit jewelry stores, only some have dealt with the allegation that the petition is racist. Of the pro-petition letters, Suzan Thompson’s (Aug. 29) was the most strident, calling the accusations of racism reprehensible and unsavory, while Peter Bolling (Aug. 27) characterized the charge as “beneath contempt” and “absurd and shameful”. Even people presumably on the fence about the issue, David Hull in particular (Aug. 29), have said the petition has nothing to do with racism. It’s also important to note that of two recent postings (Mark Steiner on Sept. 15 and Michael Moyer on the same date) both seem to be anti-petition but don’t mention racism at all. There appears to be a consensus, at least on Sitnews, that though there are many issues to discuss in reference to the jewelry store petition, racism is not one of them. I respectfully disagree.
