Ethnic Festival embraces diversity

TWO RIVERS — The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, which performs Jewish music, was a tough act to book for Ethnic Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15, said Mike Zimmer.

“Saturday is the Sabbath,” he said. “They got permission from the rabbi to perform as an outreach educational activity.”

Jeweler loses bid to keep vendors from sidewalk

Mignoni Jewelry will have to deal with vendors in front of its Mill Street business in Bristol this weekend. Bucks County Judge Jeffrey Finley on Friday denied the jeweler’s request for an injunction to stop any vendor from operating outside its doors during an arts and crafts fair today and Sunday and an Italian Festival Sunday, according to borough solicitor Richard Snyder.

The Mill Street store’s filing in Bucks County court in Doylestown requested that the Bristol Borough Business Association, which is hosting the Annual Arts and Crafts Fair, not be allowed to assign a merchant space in front of the jewelry store.

Mignoni Jewelry refused to comment. The Courier Times was unsuccessful in reaching attorney Charles D. Jonas, the store’s counsel, for comment Friday.

I’m going to Kohl’s today and here’s why:
Designer Vera Wang’s new and modestly priced line — clothing, accessories, lingerie, jewelry, linens and towels and rugs for the bath — debuts there today, and it looks absolutely fabulous!

I know, it’s an odd pairing: Kohl’s and Vera Wang, the big-time designer behind Simply Vera.
Wang is probably best known for her delicious and often hugely expensive bridal gowns — Jennifer Lopez wore one when she married Marc Anthony. Wang does Oscar gowns, too, including the plum-colored mermaid number actress Keira Knightley wore last year. Kohl’s is a value-oriented mass retailer with price scanners, shopping carts and great deals on gym shoes and picture frames.
Adding Wang’s Simply Vera collection is a stunning example of the democratization of fashion — opening up perceived luxury to women of more modest means.

Before recalls of tainted toys, an Ashland University chemistry professor began sounding the alarm about jewelry contaminated with lead.

Dr. Jeffrey Weidenhamer launched a class experiment with students in spring of 2006. They were shocked at the results. Of 20 items tested, 14 had high concentrations of the metal. They tested another 150 items and found most exceeded U.S. government standards for lead. That standard for products intended for children is .06% lead by weight. Jewelers’ Security Alliance chairman David Cornstein has announced a major crime prevention initiative, in partnership with Jewelers of America and Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co., to develop local crime prevention networks of jewelers and police.

These local crime fighting groups will be organized in towns, cities, counties, and states throughout the U.S. Members of these local networks will share information on crimes, suspects, and crime prevention measures, and will work together with their local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to reduce crime against jewelers.
