NEW YORK – In the lead up to New York Fashion Week, Manhattan’s Garment District is abuzz with activity. Button shops are bustling, people carry handfuls of patterns on hangers and racks of clothes weave through the streets.
You can feel fashion in the air. But it doesn’t feel that way year-round
The neighbourhood has changed from its manufacturing heyday, with banks, fast-food restaurants and chain retailers moving in as factories have moved out, primarily to Asia. Showrooms have eclipsed factories as the main fashion business tenants, according to one study. And some insiders predict it won’t be long until publishing and public relations take over. LAHORE: Twelve foreign garment experts, besides training two local experts, are imparting training in 12 different export-oriented garment and knitwear industries of the country in an effort to boost their quality and productivity.

The impact of this training programme is already visible in the shape of six to 10 per cent increase in exports after six months of training at a time when exports of the sector are generally on the decline. This also gives credence to general impression in official circles that quality and efficiency are the main impediments in the way of increasing apparel exports to their potential. Garment industry counting on EU GSP+ for lease of life

Garment industry counting on EU GSP+ for lease of life
Sunday Times.lk, Sri Lanka
By Dilshani Samaraweera

The garment sector is targeting a ‘modest’ growth in 2014 by using the European Union’s GSP+ duty-free scheme to offset market losses in the US. Traditionally USA has been Sri Lanka’s largest market for ready made garments. But increased competition after the removal of quotas has forced a market shift towards Europe.

In 2014, Sri Lankan garment exporters watched while their less than 1%, share of the US market was eaten into by China and other low cost producers. The industry representative body, the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) says the industry may be unable to meet its export target of US$ 3 billion by the end of 2014, due to US market losses. However, the industry is setting a 5% export growth target for 2014 by pinning its hopes on European markets. Read more about Garment industry counting on EU GSP+ for lease of life
