Garment Center Historic District listed on NRHP

The Garment Center Historic District has recently been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Known for its pristine collection of 1920’s-era loft buildings as well as the source of recent zoning controversy, the historic district comprises nearly 25 blocks in midtown Manhattan, and roughly spans the area from 34th to 41st Streets, Sixth to Ninth Avenues.

Akibat maraknya barang impor yang masuk ke Bandung, hampir 75% produksi garmen di kawasan Kecamatan Soreang berhenti. Meskipun masih berproduksi, kapasitas produksi mereka saat ini menurun drastis. Apalagi, jika melihat isi sejumlah factory outlet (FO), lebih didominasi oleh produk garmen Cina.

Demikian diungkapkan Direktur Pusat Inkubator Bisnis Institut Manajemen Koperasi Indonesia (PiBi Ikopin), Wawan Lulus Setiawan, Selasa (23/1). Menurut Wawan, jauh-jauh hari sebelum produk pakaian impor ke Bandung, rata-rata produksi pengusaha garmen per minggu mencapai 3.000 potong baju atau celana dengan mempekerjakan karyawan sekira 50 orang. PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: Prime Minister Hun Sen accused the U.N. labor agency Wednesday of false reporting about working conditions in Cambodia’s garment factories.

Speaking at a meeting with investors, the prime minister echoed complaints from a representative of clothing industry employers protesting factory monitoring work by the Geneva-based International Labor Organization.

Garment industry owners Tuesday demanded stern actions against the corrupt government officials who hardly work unless their palms greased.

They particularly mentioned the officials of Chittagong Seaport, customs and NBR, as they demand bride in every stage for moving their files forward.

The demand was made when a delegation of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) met Finance and Commerce Advisor Dr AB Mirza Md Azizul Islam at his Finance Ministry office. BGMEA president SM Fazlul Haque led the delegation. DHAKA: In a move aimed to end labour strife, the army-backed caretaker government yesterday decided to form welfare committee at every garment factory for ensuring “overall welfare and enhancing living standard” of the workers working in the garment industry.
