China : Silk textile & garment trade prospers in 2014

According to Customs statistics, China’s silk textile and apparel exports in January-November 2014 amounted to US $3.126 billion, an increase of 2.16 percent over the same period of the previous year, accounting for 2.34 percent of the total amount $133.471 billion of textile and apparel exports.

Silk textile exports registered $1.152 billion in the period representing year-on-year increase of 13.48 percent and accounting for 2.43 percent of the total amount $47.513 billion of textile exports. Yet another group of garment workers on Sunday staged sit-in at Kafrul on Rokeya Sarani to press their 10-point demands relating to their pay and other benefits.

However, police dispersed the workers of Kimberly Fashion as they damaged glasses of several passing vehicles at Shewrapara this morning.

The garment making and textile sector has expected to increase its yearly export revenue by more than 23 percent to 9.5 billion USD in 2014.

The US and Japan are predicted to be still the sector’s largest markets with their imports estimated at 1.8 billion USD and 800 million USD, respectively.

However, President of the Viet Nam Apparel and Textile Association Le Quoc An pointed out major challenges to the sector, such as supplies of raw materials largely dependent on imports, a shortage of workforce, price hike and especially an increasingly tough competition on the global market. CDA takes housing project for female garment workers

The Chittagong Development Authority has undertaken a housing project for female garment workers at Saltghola in the city’s Patenga area, involving Tk 100 crore.

Under the project, 1,000-bed dormitory and 100 small flats would be constructed, and the implementation of the project would begin within next six months, CDA sources said.
