HA NOI — The garment industry is on track to earn US$5.9 billion in exports by the end of this year, $1 billion higher than in the previous year, forecasted the Viet Nam Textile and Apparel Association.

COLOMBO, Nov 8 (IPS) – Thousands of garment workers, mostly young women from rural Sri Lanka, are clamouring for better wages in a campaign that could trigger a mass fallout in the industry, and a possible shift in production to other countries where costs are cheaper.

Workers like Chrishanthi (one name), a 23-year-old employed in a garment factory at the Katunayake Free Trade Zone near Colombo, say living costs are rising sharply and they cannot make both ends meet. “A coconut costs 30 Lankan rupees (25 US cents) and a loaf of bread is 35 rupees (30 cents). This month the grocery bill was LKR 3,888 (35.2 dollars). Unless there is a salary increase by at least LKR 2,500 (22.6 dollars) per month, we will have to resign and go home,” she said. The federal court has approved a settlement that will enable the bankrupt garment factory Advance Textile Corp. to receive a total of $290,000 from an insurance company and former ATC officials.

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson granted ATC’s Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee Robert J. Steffy Sr.’s motion to approve the settlement between the trustee and FirstNet Insurance Co. in the amount of $175,000. Read more about Munson OKs $290,000 in ATC Garment settlement

NEW DELHI: Expressing apprehension that the garment sector may see a 18-22% decline in rupee realisation in exports and loss of 6.2 lakh jobs in the current fiscal, industry representatives have demanded relief from the government.

Garment and textiles fetched US$530 million in October, brining the total export turnover of the staple in the first ten months of this year to US$4.96 billion, the Trade Ministry reports.
