Several hundred garment factory workers clashed with the police in and around Kafrul Police Station in the capital yesterday afternoon while demonstrating against the arrest of six garment workers’ leaders on October 10.

The export of readymade garments to the US, one of the major market of Nepali readymade garment, continued its downward trend in the month of September as compared to same period of the last year.

According to the data released by Garment Association Nepal (GAN), the export of readymade garment to the US declined by seven percent in the month of August as compared to same period of the last year.

According to the statistics of GAN, readymade garment worth over $ 3.29 million was exported to US in September 2014 as compared to $ 3.36 million in the same month of the last year. Read more about Export of readymade garment to US declines

Flagging consumer demand and economic pressures dragged apparel and textile imports down in August for the sixth straight month.

Apparel and textile shipments to the U.S. fell 6.4 percent to 4.68 billion square meter equivalents in August, the Commerce Department said Friday. Imports of textiles and apparel to the U.S. have fallen every month this year, except February.

Garments workers will observe today a daylong strike enforced by the Garments Sramik Sangram Parishad, an alliance of several garment workers associations, across the country demanding immediate cancellation of the recent recommendation of minimum salary of Tk 1, 662 by the Wage Board and payment salary with bonus before Eid.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Sanjukta Sramik Federation, another platform of garment workers in a meeting held at Muktangon in the city yesterday demanded the immediate implementation of the accord signed with the Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad(SKOP), a grand alliance of labourers and employees . KARACHI: The sale of ladies and children garments hit a record about 30 percent increase during this season as compared with last year’s at different shopping centres and markets in Karachi this Ramazan.

The owners and officials of the outlet said last year during Ramazan, sales of readymade garments recorded some 20 percent increase. “This Ramazan we noticed increased sale of ladies and children’s varieties,” they added.

The garments and clothes’ traders in the city’s main markets including Tariq Road, M A Jinnah Road, Saddar, Paposh Nagar, Liaquatabad, Clifton, Hyderi Market, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauher said the general prices of ladies and children garments remained at the same level but they offered slightly higher rates for quality material.
