With pressure mounting due to the deaths of weavers, the state government, which has got into a damage control mode, is wooing garment manufacturers to Sircilla in Karimnagar with sops like land at nominal costs, infrastructure and subsidised power. The industries department, last week, interacted with seven garment makers for setting up units in this town.

Sri Lanka’s garment industry says it needs exchange rate stability and the rate of inflation brought down, to do business.

“The rate of inflation needs to be brought down to at least 10 percent – 12 percent minimum, over the next 6 months. It needs to be brought down to a single digit, but immediately, this minimum level needs to be met. The other important thing is exchange rate stability. With the rupee depreciating at this rate companies cannot plan for the future,” said Ajith Dias, Chairman of the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF), the garment industry representative body. DHAKA (AFP) — Bangladesh’s garment exports were down nearly a quarter in July as political turmoil and labour unrest wreaked havoc on the sector, which is crucial to the impoverished nation’s economy, data showed.

Bangladesh exported garments worth 692 million dollars in July, down almost 24 percent from the same month a year earlier, the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association said on Saturday.

“We’ve had months of political turmoil and labour unrest since the middle of last year, which prompted the top global buyers to place export orders elsewhere,” association president Anwarul Alam Chowdhury Parvez said. Read more about Bangladesh garment exports fall sharply

DHAKA (Reuters) – Bangladesh on Thursday fixed a minimum monthly wage for textile workers at 1,662 taka ($25) following months of protests that have often halted production at many factories, officials said.

THE Minimum Wages Board at its 25th meeting on September 12 decided to fix the minimum wage for workers in the readymade garment sector at Taka 1604 per month and urged owners of garment factories to implement the same. The owners of factories termed the minimum wage high and said it was difficult for them to implement. Workers found the decision unacceptable and that mainly on the ground of failure of the Wage Board to assess the needs of the workers and earnings of owners of garment factories.
