Several thousand of agitating workers from two garment factories barricaded Rokeya Sarani yesterday for eight and a half hours resulting in a traffic gridlock in the capital.

Workers of Perfect Sweaters Ltd and TS Sweaters Ltd blockaded both sides of Rokeya Sarani stretching from Agargaon to Mirpur 10 and brought all vehicular movement to a standstill from 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Cambodian garment exports rose 14.3 percent in the first half of 2014, compared to the same period last year, a senior commerce ministry official said Thursday.

The total export of Cambodia’s garment products increased by 12 percent in the first half of this year, senior officials said on Wednesday.

The export is up 12 percent in the first six month of this year compared with the same period last year because it had good labor standard and the international buyers continued to buy garment products from Cambodia, Cham Prasidh, minister of Commerce, told the Cambodia Buyers Forum Wednesday. Workers of the ready-made garment sector will observe strike all over the country on October 16 demanding their minimum wage of Tk 3,000, execution of Labour Act along with other accords and payment of all arrears, including festival bonus before the upcoming Eid.

National Alliance for Protection of Garment Workers and Industries, a combine of some 16 labour groups announced the programme at a roundtable on ‘Labour Act in Garment Industry: Proposal of Minimum Wage and Implementation’ at Shaheed Asad Auditorium in the city yesterday. NEW DELHI: Mainetti India, manufacturer of lifestyle garment hangers, on Tuesday said it has set up a manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur at an investment of Rs 35 crore.

The facility would house a distribution centre as well as a hanger library, displaying the product ranges Mainetti manufactures worldwide, the company said in a release.

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called upon all stakeholders to immediately solve the prevailing crisis regarding minimum wage structure in the readymade garment (RMG) sector and look into other hidden causes that are responsible for the stalemate.
The minimum wage is one of the causes of violence in the sector but many other issues –workers right, overtime, regular increment, bonus, incentives and other facilities — need to be resolved for bringing back normalcy in the thriving garment sector, they said. Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) – Saturday’s massive protest rallies by garment workers in Bangladesh’s capital city was a time bomb that had been ticking for years. The violence-marred protest was organized by workers demanding better pay and improved working conditions. Despite a state ban on public demonstrations, more than 10,000 garment workers protested on Dhaka’s streets. The police, together with members from Bangladesh’s army, dispersed the rallies.
