Dissatisfied with the Thai government’s failure to help them receive severance pay after their garment factory closed without advance notice, 10 laid-off women workers on Tuesday stripped naked in front of Government House where Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont was meeting with the Cabinet.

About 300 labour union members workers of the Inter Moda garment factory in the Rangsit area of north suburban Bangkok have been protesting at Government House since Monday, demanding that the government step in and help them get severance pay following the closure of their company on August 26 without informing the workers. The Bole Ambassador Hotel, a three-star resort built by Ambassador Garment and Trade Plc, opened its services to the public on Thursday.

Housed in a twin five-storey building, the hotel sports 52 suites equipped with “modern” facilities and services including internet access, Seid Mohammed, proprietor of the resort and the company, told The Reporter.

At Your Service: I left one of my husband’s suits at U.S. Cleaners in Lee’s Summit May 5. A couple of weeks later, my husband went in to pick it up, but the cleaners couldn’t find it. They promised to call when they found it but never did. My husband and I made multiple calls and visits to the cleaners.

On June 20, l filled out a claim. Two days later, for the first time, someone from U.S. Cleaners called and offered us $70 in cash or $100 in dry cleaning as compensation for the suit. To improve the country’s competitiveness in the global garment industry, a panel of experts has called for Indonesian producers to improve their understanding of the market’s needs.

The experts were speaking Friday during the launch of the Indonesian Apparel Industry Networking Event, which is part of the 2014 Indonesian Textile and Apparel Fair here.

The one-day event, sponsored by the USAID-funded Indonesian competitiveness initiative (SENADA), together with the Indonesian Textile Association (API) and the International Garment Training Center (IGTC), is an effort to improve ties between producers and buyers. DHARMAPURI/TIRUPUR: Dharmapuri is slowly emerging as a garment hub. Now more than 22 stitching units are functioning around Dharmapuri, employing nearly 500 women.

Reeling under severe shortage of skilled labourers, garment manufacturers from Tirupur and Salem are now supplying fabric through agents to these stitching units.

Proximity to textile hubs of Salem, Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore on the one side and Bangalore on the other, located on National Highway 7 and well connected by road and rail networks to Chennai port and Bangalore airport are the advantages of the district.
