Garment firm closures dampen sentiment
Last month’s closure of the garment and footwear manufacturers Thai Silp South East Asia Import Export Co and Union Footwear Plc hurt consumer confidence, according to the latest survey by the University of the Thai Chamber Of Commerce.

The survey of more than 2,000 consumers showed many were worried about unemployment, while others feared the strong baht and high fuel prices, according to Thanavath Phonvichai, director of the university’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting. Garment sales have fallen by 24.6 percent to US $146 million during the 10 months of current fiscal in Northern Marianas compared with same period previous year because of the closure of 10 units since January, 2005.

MUMBAI: Alok Industries, the Mumbai-based textile firm, is likely to sell minority stake in its demerged retail and garment businesses to private equity players.

The demerged businesses need capital for expansion and don’t want to depend on the parent for it. Equity dilution, therefore, is the preferred option.
