Dhaka, July. 22 (PTI): India has offered to buy eight million items of garments every year, which are currently in the sensitive list, from Bangladesh to deepen trade ties.

“An MoU to give effect to these imports by India is now awaiting final approval by Bangladesh and I hope it can be signed very soon,” Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said here at the launch of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Our old catechisms used to tell us that we reach the age of reason at, roughly, age seven. At one level, that’s true, we can be responsible for ourselves then in a way we couldn’t when we were toddlers or in kindergarten. Garment manufacturers of the country have requested to implement Free Trade Agreement (FTA) soon because any delay may result in 4,000 job loss.

Under FTA, manufacturers get duty concessions, which will support speedy revival of the ailing factories, informed Harinder Singh Lamba, Vice-Chairman, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry Readymade Garments and Textiles Committee. Thai textile and garment producers have shown interest in establishing production facilities in Vietnam to serve their exports to the United States, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Thursday.

Thailand has encountered difficulties in reaching a free trade agreement with the United States, so lower labor costs in Vietnam and the country’s imminent entry into the World Trade Organization will help Thai-invested enterprises to boost their exports to the U.S. market, the newspaper quoted sources from the Vietnamese Trade Office in Thailand as saying. SAMUT PRAKAN, July 19 (TNA) – A garment firm, Thai Silp South East Import Export Co, will shut down its factory on August 7 due to heavy loss and offer severance pay to about 6,000 employees, Labour Minister Apai Chandanachulaka said Thursday.

About 200 policemen were on guard as employees peacefully rallied outside the factory in Bang Phli district of the Bangkok’s outlying province.

Sakda Thepcharoenniran, chief of the Samut Prakan branch of the Labour Protection and Welfare Deparment, said the company would hand out a portion of the total severance payment while the rest would be paid after it manages to sell its properties. On 17 July, Vietnamese Ministry of Trade (MOT) announced list of enterprises to export goods categories no. 647/648 (synthetic fibre–trousers for men and women) to the US market by signing Notification No.0279/BTM-DM.
