June 27, 2014 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s garment exports to key markets slowed in the first quarter, as price pressures and competition ate into industry growth.

Total clothing exports in the first quarter this year grew just 1.1 percent over 2005, compared to the 11.2 percent increase in 2005 over 2004, industry apex body, the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) said Tuesday.

CURRENT rules under a regional trade agreement could see local garment manufacturers lose their markets overnight if they increase productivity and efficiency.

Fiji Textile, Clothing and Footwear Council president Ramesh Solanki said current rules of origin requirements under the South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Co-operation Agreement were a deterrent to improving productivity and efficiency.

He said any improvements in efficiency would reduce the value of local manufacturing input making it difficult to comply with SPARTECA rules. Read more about Rules to affect garment markets

Pemkot Solo berencana kembali mematenkan sekitar 200 motif batik. Sebelumnya sebanyak 215 motif batik telah dipatenkan.
Kepala Dinas Perindustrian Perdagangan dan Penanaman Modal (Disperindag dan PM) Solo, Masrin Hadi mengatakan anggaran untuk mematenkan motif batik asal Solo itu sekitar Rp 50 juta.
”Anggaran sudah diajukan dalam APBP Perubahan (APBDP). Tinggal menunggu persetujuan Dewan (DPRD),” jelas Masrin ketika ditemui Espos, di ruang kerjanya, Rabu (21/6).
Alokasi anggaran itu, kata dia, akan digunakan untuk melakukan studi tentang motif-motif batik yang akan dipatenkan itu.Ditambahkan Kasi Industri Kecil Disperindag dan PM, Abdul Mutholib mengungkapkan tahun lalu, Pemkot Solo telah mematenkan sekitar 215 motif batik dengan lisensi milik Pemkot Solo. INCREASING productivity level in the garment industry will guarantee the Australian government’s commitment to open its market to Fiji, an Australian garment expert says.

Media has recently talked much about the PNTR and its significance. But many do not know what it is. Could you briefly introduce the PNTR?
Vietnam and the US normalized diplomatic relations in 1995 and signed the bilateral trade agreement in 2001. However, the US still applies Jackson Vanik amendment to Vietnam. The amendment hinders trade relations between the 2 countries.
