Garment workers demand realisation of 8-pt charter

Leaders of the country’s leading 16 garment workers organisations yesterday demanded of the government, BGMEA and BKMEA to press home their 8-point charter of demands.

The call came from a press briefing held in the afternoon in the city. HO CHI MINH: The workers of Top Royal Flash Ltd. struck work demanding lower workload and social welfare coverage.
Over 800 workers participated in the strike.

The Taiwanese owned garment company “Top Royal Flash Ltd.” is located in Ho Chi Minh City.

The workers said they are forced to work overtime four or five days a week for the past four months. The company has deducted part of their salaries to pay social insurance for half a year, but it has not sent the amount to the authorities, according to the workers. Garment industry wants more homemade fabric

The garment export industry says it needs more home made fabric to remain competitive and wants the Board of Investment (BOI) to give better incentives to pull in more textile investments.

The industry says it could benefit from lower lead times, as well as potential cost savings, if the fabrics were made at home.
“We need to come with new strategies to attract investments in textiles. Other countries in the region are now offering better incentives. So we need to think creatively about this because we have to offer better incentives to attract investors,” said Deputy Chairman of the Joint Apparel Association Forum, A Sukumaran, at the recent Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and BOI Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2014. Government ends support for textile and garment industry

The Prime Minister has decided to end support for the textile and garment industry to ensure equality in competition, and meet the requirements of international economic integration in new situation, particularly Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation.
