6 garment parks in Bengal soon

KOLKATA, APR18 : West Bengal will have at least two integrated garment parks in two years at an estimated investment of Rs 600 crore. Apart from this, at least four garment parks will come up in and around Kolkata.

Vietnam: Garment and textile sector accelerates growth in second quarter

Member companies of the Vietnam Garment and Textile Group (VGTG) achieved high production and consumption growth in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period of 2005. Industrial production value reached more than VND2,400 billion, up more than 20 percent, turnover increased by 17 percent, export value earned more than US$120 billion, up 26.5 percent, and profit is estimated at more than VND47 billion, up 104 percent. The dollar’s hammering is now starting to hurt garment exporters, and soon most exporters may prefer moving to low-cost producing countries like Bangaldesh and Vietnam, reports CNBC-TV18.

First it was the IT industry, which said that the rupee appreciation against the dollar would hurt margins and now it is the textile sector, which is crying foul. Nine garment factories penalised -forlack of adequate safety equipment

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) during the last 15 days of its crash programme fined nine garment factories for not having adequate fire safety equipment, reports UNB.

The ‘D category’ factories were fined Tk 10,000 each and asked to comply with the safety measures.
Under the crash programme, the BGMEA inspection teams visited 536 industrial units and asked some factories to arrange double exit and some others to expand the stairways to ensure smooth exit in case of any emergency. Century Textile and Industries Limited (CTIL) has forayed into apparels business in a big way with the setting up of exclusive stores across the country to retail a range of product categories.

Under its wholly owned subsidiary Cottons by Century, the company has 46 stores and 10 franchisee outlets and has begun distribution of varied readymade garments in Kerala with opening of 32 stores through a single dealer. ‘We will be opening 70 new stores in this year, with expansion mostly in the West and North. Around 70 per cent of our operational costs are from retail business for we invest Rs 15-20 lakh per store,’ said Subrata Siddhanta, business head, Cottons by Century, at a press conference recently.
