Saipan’s seven remaining garment factories have asked the Northern Marianas administration to save what’s left of the once dominant industry, the Saipan Tribune reports.

The companies, in a letter sent in late March, asked Gov. Benigno Fitial to push for changes in trade relations agreements between the U.S.-islands and Washington, to exempt the Northern Marianas from pending increases to the minimum wage, and to waive many local taxes and fees that impact the industry. Approximately 340 Panhandle residents learned Friday morning that they’ll be losing their jobs as WestPoint Home in Chipley announced it is closure.
According to textile plant manager Terry Ellis, about 150 to 160 of those jobs are held by Jackson County residents.

HANOI, April 5 Asia Pulse – The Vietnam Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex Group) plans to build a garment and textile materials trading centre in Ho Chi Minh City with total investment capital of US$25 million.

Uong Tien Thinh, General Director of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Garment and Textile Trade Company, made the announcement at a seminar in the city on April 4.

Covering five hectares in Thu Duc district, the centre will include offices, an exhibition area, materials stores, shops, bonded warehouses, entertainment and culinary sections. The Government has focused attention on the propaganda carried out locally and internationally by a certain group with the intention of depriving the country of advantages gained through selective tax concessions in the exportation of garments.

The bogus propaganda, alleged to have been carried out by a Non Governmental Organization , stipulates that conditions laid down by the European Community to obtain tax relief could not be fulfilled without amending the constitution. The Sources point out that however the Government position in this regard was substantiated by a recent Supreme Court verdict, which stated that the rights, subjected to controversy, have been appropriately established in the local legal system. The Karnataka government has cleared the ‘gems and jewellery park’ and ‘integrated garment city projects’ that are proposed to be set up on the outskirts of Bangalore.
Speaking to reporters here, Karnataka small scale industries (SSI) minister Katta Subrahmanyam Naidu said that the projects were proposed by various trade associations.

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched a crash programme to create awareness on fire safety by conducting fire drills and fire-equipment inspections at 40 garment factories, inspectors reported yesterday.

Starting from 1.30pm, the inspectors split into ten teams under separate zones and inspected factories till 8pm on Saturday night.
The special awareness-building campaign on how to face fire started with moves
