LOS ANGELES — Who knew we all needed the “Bladder Buddy.” After all, being able to go in public without anybody knowing what you’re doing under that plastic garment bag might come in handy someday.

“Not,” say the four judges on Simon Cowell’s latest competitive concoction, “American Inventor,” premiering Thursday.

The show highlights some of the country’s brightest and most inventive minds — as well as some of the nuttier variety — in a search for the next new “it” gadget. Contestants will vie for a $1 million prize and the chance to have their invention end up in homes across the land.

“It’s everything I love about reality shows, which is the good, the weird and the completely and utterly disillusioned,” Cowell said Read more about Some of America's inventive minds will compete on new reality show

HINCKLEY TWP. — The Ides of March is traditionally deemed ominous, as it marks the anniversary of the day Julius Caesar was murdered a few thousand years ago.

But it also signals the anniversary of another (slightly more pleasant) time — spring; more specifically, the famed buzzards that bring it faithfully back to Hinckley Township each year.

While most in the area are familiar with “Buzzard Day” and “Buzzard Sunday,” when the 7,000-person population township swells by at least a couple thousand, Ruth Fitzgibben and her employees have what they call “Buzzard Week.” Read more about Hinckley’s buzzards put firm’s designs on T-shirts

Evansville-based Don’s Cleaners, which also includes Clayton’s Fine Drycleaning, is among fewer than two dozen companies in the industry today using a new high-tech bar coding system, according to owner Steve Schmitt.

The system allows the cleaners to track each customer’s dry-cleaning from start to finish in a speedier, more efficient and accurate manner, he said.

The bar coding also provides a permanent record of the dry-cleaning history of each garment that is dropped off at one of the company’s stores Read more about Cleaners raise industry's bar

HNOM PENH (AFP) – Asia’s most vulnerable garment sectors have survived — even flourished — and proved the nay-sayers wrong during their first year without the protection of the global quota system.

But industry officials say they have only done so with the help of additional safeguards imposed by the United States and European Union against textile giant China

The end in December 2004 of the decades-old international quota system known as the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA), which gave developing countries guaranteed access to developed countries’ markets, was expected to doom the garment sector in countries like Cambodia, Bangladesh and Vietnam Read more about Chinese garment quotas breathing life into vulnerable Asian textile sectors
