ATHENS – Despite the clouds and wayward raindrops, hundreds filed through the annual Athens ArtsFest on Saturday, taking in the sights, sounds and smells.
Vendor Joe Kane sat under his tent in the field outside Rowe Junior High School, covered from head to toe in a warm sleeping bag, with only his Panama hat and sunglasses peering from the covers.

“We’re cold, but we’re here,” he said with a laugh. “It’s so cold, people don’t even want to stop and look.”
But some people did stop and carried their purchases about with joy, like Rose Mint of Waverly. Read more about From jewelry to funnel cake, fest offers fun

The Diamond Information Center at JWT reports that retail sales of diamond jewelry in the U.S. increased by 7 percent in 2005. Total U.S. retail sales for the diamond jewelry category, which represents over 50 percent of sales worldwide, totaled $33.7 billion in 2005 – a $2.2 billion increase over 2004 sales of $31.5 billion. The total number of transactions grew by 3 percent over 2004 and average ticket price showed a 4 percent growth.

“Following a year of tremendous growth, we must continue to challenge ourselves to expand the diamond jewelry market, not only by creating new designs, but also by discovering new integrated ways of reaching our consumer,” said Richard Lennox, director-in-charge of the Diamond Marketing and Advertising Group at JWT. “We are lucky to work with a product that holds such a deep emotional meaning for consumers; however, we must not take this for granted. As a collective industry, we must protect these emotions if we hope to continue to move the market in 2006 and beyond.” Read more about U.S. Retail Diamond Jewelry Market Grows For 10th Consecutive Year

Lee residents pawning jewelry for gas money
The News-Press

Southwest Florida pawn shops have become stop-offs for some residents looking for a few extra bucks to fill their gas tanks.

With most unleaded regular fuel prices hovering around $3 a gallon, pawn shops are being hit up for cash to offset the high costs. Pawn shops are one of the few places where people can get money as fast as gas prices are rising.

“The last person in here pawned some jewelry to fill the gas tank,” said Robert Nykiel, owner of Bob’s Best Jewelry & Pawn, 1341 Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral, who reported steady business Wednesday. “They say ‘I need gas money until payday.’” Read more about Lee residents pawning jewelry for gas money

Spring Fair boasts a wide variety of vendors, offering everything from T-shirts to soaps, purses, belts, pottery pictures, jewelry, buttons and crab shells. The vendors represent an impressive diversity of tastes. There were a few African booths with beautiful carvings, decorative gourds and wooden jewelry. Asian influence was also seen, in the delicate floral jewelry, which seemed to be blooming in the rare Sunday sun.

Booths with woolen sweaters were reminiscent of those in South American markets. Walking through the Upper Quad felt like strolling through the countries of the world exhibit at Epcot: the land of “Preppy Style” nested comfortably next to hand-crafted Nicaraguan pottery, African American- and jazz-themed framed prints and Latin American pottery.
