Fashionistas who glimpsed the fall 2008 runway shows saw an emerging trend: statement jewelry. Among the scene stealers was a number at the Givenchy show featuring a dozen thick, gold chains with crosses messily layered, as well as a 3-inch-wide pearl and crystal choker at Balenciaga. Bold looks stood front and center.
However, most people don’t have the dimes–make that hundreds of thousands of dimes–to afford such flourishes. (The aforementioned Balenciaga costs a cool $9,875). Costume jewelry, on the other hand, which generated $900 million in U.S. sales in 2007 (according to a May 2008 report released by Supplier Relations, an Irvine, Calif.-based market research company), can be affordable and a perfect match with current fashions–and it doesn’t have to look cheap.
