DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/27 August) — After more than two decades of hosting large and small-scale gold mining, Compostela Valley province will now make jewelry-making a priority and its governor is eyeing a cooperative set-up for this.

Governor Arthur Uy, who spoke to reporters at the Kapihan sa Dabaw press conference at SM City today, said he will make jewelry-making a priority of his administration.

KETCHIKAN — Ketchikan voters in October will determine whether the location of future jewelry stores should be limited.

Borough Clerk Harriett Edwards certified a ballot petition Friday to put the issue on the fall municipal ballot.

Edwards said 594 petition signatures were valid. Sponsors needed to gather at least 533 signatures of registered voters to put the initiative on the Oct. 2 ballot.

The initiative calls for prohibiting future jewelry stores from locating within 200 feet of each other.
