It could be California’s second Gold Rush.

The skyrocketing price of gold has people mining their jewelry boxes for every bit of the precious metal to sell for cash.

Prices have gone from $416 an ounce on New Year’s Eve five years ago to a little more than $1,000 in 2008. The price closed at $807.30 an ounce Friday.

PANAMA CITY — Assistant Public Defender Fritz Mann told jurors Tuesday to look at the details to shape their verdict in Maurice Robinson’s burglary trial this week.

Robinson, 32, of Opa-locka, is charged with two counts of grand theft of more than $100,000, burglary of a structure with damage of more than $1,000, burglary of a structure or conveyance and possessing burglary tools. He faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Robinson is accused of participating in three jewelry store burglaries the morning of Nov. 19, 2007. His trial began Tuesday with opening statements and the first witnesses. The trial is expected to go late into Thursday or Friday. Read more about Jewelry heist truth in the details, jury told …

PANAMA CITY — Prosecutor Larry Basford asked prospective jurors Monday whether they were fans of the television shows “CSI” or “Law and Order.”
All 21 raised their hand.
It has become a standard jury selection question and usually is followed by a statement explaining that what they see on television is not like real life. But Basford indicated, instead, that some of the evidence jurors would see in Maurice Robinson’s trial this week would rise to the “CSI” level.

Eden Prairie, Minn.–On-air retailers ShopNBC and Jewelry Television are among the latest companies to announce they are cutting staff as sales wane in the face of the global economic crisis.
