Ana Cristina Godoy grew up in Colombia, studied in Italy and recently taught at the University of California at Los Angeles. But now, the professional jewelry designer is setting up a gallery and will soon begin teaching classes across from the old courthouse in downtown Newton.

Before recalls of tainted toys, an Ashland University chemistry professor began sounding the alarm about jewelry contaminated with lead.

Dr. Jeffrey Weidenhamer launched a class experiment with students in spring of 2006. They were shocked at the results. Of 20 items tested, 14 had high concentrations of the metal. They tested another 150 items and found most exceeded U.S. government standards for lead. That standard for products intended for children is .06% lead by weight. Jewelers’ Security Alliance chairman David Cornstein has announced a major crime prevention initiative, in partnership with Jewelers of America and Jewelers Mutual Insurance Co., to develop local crime prevention networks of jewelers and police.

These local crime fighting groups will be organized in towns, cities, counties, and states throughout the U.S. Members of these local networks will share information on crimes, suspects, and crime prevention measures, and will work together with their local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to reduce crime against jewelers.

In 2006, American consumers spent $62.2 billion buying jewelry and watches, posting a dramatic 6.5 percent increase over sales in 2005 of $58.4 billion, according to new research from Unity Marketing, Stevens, Pa. Her daughter was 5 in 2004 when Erin McGuire bought her a necklace with ballet charms that were marked “silver.”
When Chelsea wore it, she’d suck on the charms. “We would always tell her to take it out of her mouth,” says McGuire of San Jose, Calif.

A couple months later, Chelsea’s school suggested she be tested for lead poisoning. The results showed a lead level of 27, nearly three times higher than the government’s minimum risk level of 10. The list of celebrities wearing jewelry by Vancouver’s Damien Brown continues to grow.

Brown said Paris Hilton , country singer Tim McGraw and actress Naomi Watts all have worn pieces from his collection this summer. Toryn Green , lead singer for the band Fuel, also was spotted wearing one of Brown’s pendants, according to Brown.

His collection is predominantly necklaces and earrings but will expand this fall and spring.
